This product is an un-tailored fukuro obi recommended for casual occasions.
This striking obi features a large whale depicted on a background of various shades of blue (dark navy blue) (refer to "Teihon Wairo Jiten" - Definitive Dictionary of Japanese Colors).
The whale's eye appears at the center of the "otaiko" (bow) part, and its tail appears on the "hara" (belly) part, so at first glance, it might be difficult to tell what the pattern is.
Perhaps this is what true sophistication is.
The beautiful ground color, which expresses the depths of the ocean, utilizes the hikihaku technique.
Hikihaku is a technique for creating patterns by applying gold and silver foil onto Japanese paper that has been coated with lacquer and sealed.
This requires advanced skill to cut the foil into strands as thin as hair and weave them into the fabric while pulling them tight, making it one of the most difficult weaving techniques in Nishijin-ori.
The whale's eyes and the shimmer on its body are adorned with raden (mother-of-pearl inlay).
Raden is a decorative technique using the lustrous nacreous layer of seashells like iridescent top shells, symbolizing a glorious future and wishing for prosperity for descendants. Furthermore, because shells were once used as currency, they are also said to represent the protection of wealth.
For this obi, instead of simply attaching raden, the raden-applied Japanese paper is cut into fine strips and woven into the fabric like thread.
Coordinate this obi with iromuji, komon, or tsumugi kimonos to enjoy a unique and stylish look.
Additionally, this obi is reversible, so the reverse side can also be used.
The reverse side has a simple and stylish feel with a turquoise blue and black checkerboard pattern.
You can enjoy a completely different atmosphere from the whale side.
Since this is an un-tailored item, the dimensions are approximate.
No stains or dirt are visible, making it perfectly wearable.
