In the early Meiji period, production of Saga Nishiki was temporarily suspended, but Okuma Shigenobu, a native of Saga Prefecture, was so sad to see it go that it was revived among the former nobility. Later, at the 1910 Japan-British Exhibition held in London, Okuma Shigenobu arranged for what had previously been called Kumi Nishiki and Kashima Nishiki to be exhibited under the name Saga Nishiki.
